From my life: My father is an avid football fan- English football that is. He faithfully listened to the Soccer Weekly radio show from its inception till is stopped. When he moved into an assisted living facility in Bel Air Maryland close by to where I live, he was concerned he wouldn't find anyone who shared his passion for the English soccer league teams. Liverpool FC England is his favorite team. They also happened to be ranked #1 in 2020, which my father always reminds me when I visit him at Hart Heritage Estates. It never ceases to amaze me that my elderly father who is in his nineties, have become computer savvy. He has his favorite websites that I have bookmarked for him so all he does is click a tab on his top nav if he wants to check out the news. Several of the aids at the nursing home are from England and also fans. I have gotten him the Hulu With Live TV, streaming service so he can actually watch English Premier League (EPL) live matches. I also paid for NBC Sports Premier League Pass, which only gives him access to about 130 live streamed games out of the typically 380 games played per season. He is trying this service out to see if it worth the extra money for the season. My father as well as I have been very happy with the Forest Hill home for seniors location. The facility is located on 6.5 acres of park-like grounds which are lovely for strolls. I have even put a pair of binoculars next to the window in my father's room so he can check out the birds and wild life that are on the property. However, during the football season I think he spends more time watching the games than looking out his window at birds! I'd like to give a shout out to Hart Heritage Estates. If you are looking for a senior living facility in the Bel Air area of Maryland, (they have 2 such residential care facilities) go to their website: HartHeritageAssistedLiving.com to learn more.

More Background on World Soccer Weekly

World Soccer Weekly has established itself as one of the most influential and long-running soccer radio programs in the United States. For nearly two decades, this show has been at the forefront of bringing international soccer coverage and analysis to American audiences. Through its engaging hosts, in-depth interviews, and passionate fan interactions, World Soccer Weekly has played a significant role in growing the popularity of soccer in the US and connecting fans to the global game.

Origins and History

World Soccer Weekly first hit the airwaves in 2002, at a time when soccer coverage in American media was still relatively limited. The show was founded by Steven Cohen and Nick Geber, two British expats living in Los Angeles who saw an opportunity to bring their passion and knowledge of international soccer to US audiences.

Cohen and Geber started out with a weekly three-hour show on Fox Sports Radio in Los Angeles. Their quick wit, insider knowledge, and ability to break down the intricacies of the sport for newcomers quickly gained them a devoted following. As soccer's popularity grew in the US in the early 2000s, so did World Soccer Weekly's reach and influence.

By 2004, the show had expanded to daily broadcasts and was being syndicated nationally. It found a home on Sirius Satellite Radio, allowing it to reach listeners across the country. The show's growth mirrored the increasing interest in international soccer among American fans, particularly as coverage of European leagues became more accessible.

Show Format and Content

World Soccer Weekly's format has evolved over the years, but it has maintained a focus on comprehensive coverage of international soccer. The show typically features:

  • Match analysis and recaps, particularly focusing on major European leagues like the English Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A

  • Interviews with players, coaches, and other soccer personalities

  • Discussion of transfer rumors and news

  • Fan call-ins and interaction

  • Coverage of international tournaments like the World Cup and European Championship

One of the show's strengths has been its ability to cater to both hardcore soccer fans and newcomers to the sport. Cohen and Geber have a knack for explaining tactical nuances and historical context in an accessible way, helping to educate American audiences on the finer points of the global game.

Hosts and Personalities

Steven Cohen and Nick Geber have been the heart and soul of World Soccer Weekly since its inception. Their chemistry and contrasting personalities have been a key part of the show's appeal.

Steven Cohen, known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial opinions, brings a wealth of knowledge about English football in particular. His passion for the game is evident in every broadcast, and he's not afraid to engage in heated debates with callers or guests.

Nick Geber provides a more measured counterpoint to Cohen's fiery style. His analytical approach and dry wit complement Cohen well, creating a dynamic that keeps listeners engaged.

Over the years, the show has featured a rotating cast of co-hosts, correspondents, and regular guests, bringing diverse perspectives on the game from around the world.

Cultural and Social Significance

World Soccer Weekly has played a significant role in growing soccer culture in the United States. By providing a platform for passionate discussion about international soccer, the show has helped foster a community of fans and contributed to the sport's rising popularity.

The show has served as an important bridge between American fans and the global soccer world. For many listeners, World Soccer Weekly has been their introduction to the rich history, traditions, and current events of international soccer. This has been particularly valuable in a country where soccer has historically been overshadowed by other sports.

World Soccer Weekly has also tackled important social and cultural issues related to soccer. The hosts have not shied away from discussing topics like racism in football, the economics of the sport, and the politics surrounding major tournaments. This has helped contextualize soccer within broader global issues for American audiences.

Media Coverage and Recognition

Over its long run, World Soccer Weekly has garnered significant media attention and industry recognition. The show has been featured in major publications, highlighting its influence on soccer coverage in the US.

The hosts have become recognized experts in their field, often appearing on other media outlets to provide commentary on major soccer events. Their success with World Soccer Weekly led to additional opportunities, including a television show on Fox Soccer Channel called "Fox Football Fone-In".

Audience and Reach

World Soccer Weekly's audience has grown substantially since its early days. While exact listener numbers are not publicly available, the show's longevity and expansion to daily broadcasts indicate a significant and loyal following.

The show's audience is diverse, ranging from die-hard soccer fans to casual observers looking to learn more about the sport. Its presence on satellite radio and various streaming platforms has allowed it to reach listeners across the United States and beyond.

The interactive nature of the show, with regular caller participation, has fostered a sense of community among listeners. Fans often engage in lively debates and discussions, both on-air and through social media channels associated with the show.

Impact on Soccer Journalism

World Soccer Weekly has had a lasting impact on soccer journalism in the United States. It was one of the pioneers in providing in-depth, daily coverage of international soccer at a time when such content was scarce in American media.

The show's success demonstrated that there was a significant audience for serious soccer discussion in the US, paving the way for other media outlets to expand their coverage. Many of the topics and formats introduced by World Soccer Weekly have become standard in American soccer journalism.

Challenges and Controversies

Like any long-running media program, World Soccer Weekly has faced its share of challenges and controversies. The outspoken nature of the hosts, particularly Steven Cohen, has occasionally led to backlash from fans or figures within the soccer world.

Despite such occasional controversies, the show has maintained its popularity and influence, demonstrating its resilience and the loyalty of its core audience.

Legacy and Ongoing Influence

As soccer continues to grow in popularity in the United States, World Soccer Weekly's legacy is evident in the proliferation of soccer-focused media content now available to American fans. The show helped create a template for how to discuss and analyze international soccer for a US audience.

Many of the journalists and commentators who have appeared on World Soccer Weekly over the years have gone on to prominent roles in soccer media, further extending the show's influence.

While the media landscape has changed dramatically since World Soccer Weekly's inception, with podcasts and streaming services now competing for listeners' attention, the show continues to maintain a dedicated following. Its longevity is a testament to the quality of its content and the enduring appeal of its format.

In conclusion, World Soccer Weekly has been more than just a radio show; it has been a cultural touchstone for soccer fans in the United States. By bringing the passion, drama, and global significance of soccer to American airwaves, it has played a crucial role in cultivating a knowledgeable and engaged soccer fan base in the country. As the beautiful game continues to grow in popularity in the US, the influence of pioneering programs like World Soccer Weekly will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
